May 13 (Reuters) - South Carolina's highest court on Wednesday overturned the murder conviction of former lawyer Richard "Alex" Murdaugh, who was serving two consecutive life sentences for allegedly shooting his wife and 22-year-old son dead in June 2021.
The state's supreme court ruled Murdaugh's 2023 trial was marred by the “improper” influence of county clerk Becky Hill. The decision followed a February request by Murdaugh's attorney for a new trial.
“Although we are aware of the time, money, and effort expended for this lengthy trial, we have no choice but to reverse the denial of Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial due to Hill’s improper external influences on the jury and remand for a new trial,” the five justices wrote in their unanimous decision.
In court filings, Murdaugh's lawyers argued he deserved a new trial based on alleged jury tampering and prosecutorial errors during the investigation and trial.
Murdaugh is from an influential legal family in an area west of Charleston. His case drew nationwide interest given his political power and the nature of the violent crime involving his family members. He will remain in state prison, where he is serving a 27-year sentence for financial crimes.
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson said his office would seek to retry Murdaugh as soon as possible. "No one is above the law," Wilson said in a statement.
COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) — A U.S. Air Force training jet crashed Tuesday in west Alabama with both pilots ejecting safely, military officials said.
Military officials said a T-38 Talon II aircraft from Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi was involved in a “mishap” at noon.
“The cause of the mishap is currently unknown and will be investigated by a Safety Investigation Board,” according to a news release from base officials.
The public affairs office at the Columbus Air Force Base said it could not provide information about the condition of the pilots other than to say they safely ejected.
The base is home to the 14th Flying Training Wing, which trains pilots on a variety of aircraft. The T-38 Talon is a supersonic jet trainer.

The Trump administration has named David Venturella as the next acting head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, replacing current acting director Todd Lyons at the end of the month.
Venturella previously worked as an executive with GEO Group, one of the nation’s largest private prison and immigration detention companies. Before returning to ICE, he served in leadership roles overseeing detention contracts and corporate development.
The leadership change comes as the Trump administration continues expanding immigration detention operations and pushing forward with its mass deportation agenda. ICE has played a central role in those efforts, ramping up arrests, detention capacity, and enforcement operations nationwide.
Venturella’s appointment is already drawing scrutiny from immigration advocates and critics who point to his ties to the private prison industry. Supporters of the move say his long experience inside ICE and the detention system makes him qualified to lead the agency during a period of major expansion.
The company operating the cruise ship linked to a deadly hantavirus outbreak says it expects to decide by the end of the week whether the vessel will continue its planned summer cruise schedule.
The Dutch-flagged MV Hondius had been scheduled to depart later this month for Arctic cruises throughout the summer, according to the company’s website.
Health officials say three passengers have died in the outbreak, including a Dutch couple believed to have first been exposed to hantavirus during a trip through South America.
In total, 11 cases have now been reported worldwide, with nine of those cases confirmed.
Officials continue monitoring former passengers as the investigation into the outbreak continues.
The Trump administration is temporarily blocking new home health and hospice providers from enrolling in Medicare as part of a broader effort to crack down on healthcare fraud.
Officials say the pause will give the federal government time to review billions of dollars in Medicare spending and strengthen oversight rules for providers entering the system.
The move is tied to Vice President JD Vance’s anti-fraud task force, which argues fraudulent operators have been able to quickly establish businesses and bill the Medicare program under current regulations.
The administration says the temporary freeze is intended to prevent abuse while federal agencies develop additional safeguards and guidance for hospice and home healthcare providers.
The World Health Organization says the hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship has now grown to 11 reported cases worldwide, including three deaths.
Health officials say a French woman infected during the outbreak is critically ill and is being treated with an artificial lung at a hospital in Paris.
Spanish authorities also confirmed a new hantavirus case Tuesday, with that patient now in quarantine at a military hospital.
Meanwhile, 15 Americans remain under medical observation at a quarantine unit in Nebraska as officials continue monitoring for possible infections tied to the outbreak.
President Donald Trump has arrived in Beijing for a closely watched summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping as tensions over trade, inflation, and global conflicts continue to weigh on relations between the world’s two largest economies.
Trade is expected to dominate discussions during the meeting, with the White House pushing for the creation of a new “Board of Trade” aimed at easing tensions and preventing additional trade disputes between the United States and China.
The proposed framework would focus on increasing trade in non-sensitive goods while maintaining restrictions and export controls on technologies tied to national security concerns.
The summit comes at a politically challenging moment for Trump, who is facing mounting pressure over the ongoing Iran war and rising inflation at home. The president has also indicated he plans to discuss Taiwan and a proposed multi-billion-dollar weapons package during the visit.
Trump spoke with reporters ahead of the meeting and expressed optimism about the future of U.S.-China relations.

In this episode, the host discusses the shocking story of Medicaid fraud in Ohio, where a couple, Conte and Mama Sue Canoe, made millions by scamming the system. The couple, with a history of convictions, including theft and assault, were able to get certified as a Medicaid provider and received over $900,000 in taxpayer dollars. The host questions how this could happen in a red state like Ohio, where Republicans are in power. The conversation touches on the importance of scrutinizing legal immigration and the need for accountability in government programs.

A small plane crashed Tuesday in Bahamian waters about 80 miles (about 130 kilometers) off the coast of Florida and all 10 people aboard were rescued, officials in the Bahamas said.
The pilot had declared an emergency and then communication with the aircraft was lost, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority in the Bahamas said in a media post. The U.S. Coast Guard and multiple Bahamian agencies were involved in the ensuring search and rescue.
The U.S. Coast Guard launched a C-27 aircraft to look for the downed Beechcraft 300 King Air turboprop plane. The rescued passengers were brought in for medical evaluations, the Coast Guard said.
The cause of the crash remains unknown.
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) — Denver airport workersl initially missed a security breach by a 41-year-old man who scaled an 8-foot perimeter fence and crossed a runway where he was hit and killed by a plane. Authorities said Tuesday that the man was intending to end his own life when he entered the airport and crossed a runway as a Frontier Airlines plane attempted to take off. The medical examiner said no note was immediately recovered. The collision sparked an engine fire, and the plane was evacuated after the cabin filled with smoke. Twelve passengers suffered minor injuries during the evacuation and five were taken to hospitals.
WASHINGTON, May 12 (Reuters) - The United States' war in Iran has ?cost $29 billion so far, a senior Pentagon official said on Tuesday, an increase of $4 billion from an estimate provided late last month.
With just six months before midterm elections in which President Donald Trump's Republicans may face an uphill battle to keep their House majority, Democrats are riding high in public opinion polls as they attempt to link the war with cost of living issues.
On April 29, the Pentagon said the war at that point had cost $25 billion.
Jules Hurst, who is performing the duties of the ?comptroller, told lawmakers on Tuesday that the new cost included updated repair and replacement of equipment and operational costs.
"The joint staff team and the comptroller team are constantly looking at that estimate," Hurst said. He was speaking alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Caine.
It is unclear how the Pentagon arrived at the $29 billion figure. A source told Reuters in March that Trump's administration estimated the first six days of the war had cost at ?least $11.3 billion.
WASHINGTON, May 12 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Tuesday Cuba is asking for help and "we are going to talk," without providing any more information about U.S. plans.
Trump has heaped pressure on the Caribbean island nation since returning to office last year, and threatened that Cuba "is next" after U.S. forces captured Nicolas Maduro, the president of longtime Cuban ally Venezuela, in January.
"No Republican has ever spoken to me about Cuba, which is a failed country and only heading in one direction - down! Cuba is asking for help, and we are going to talk!!! In the meantime, I'm off to China!" Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform.
Trump declined to give further information when speaking to reporters at the White House as he departed on a trip to China.
"Cuba is not doing well. It's a failed nation, and we'll be talking about Cuba at the right time," Trump said.
Trump has imposed fresh financial sanctions on Cuba and expanded others. His administration also has imposed a fuel blockade, curtailed U.S. travel and remittances to Cuba and sought to dissuade regional allies from contracting Cuban doctors.
Asked about planned talks, a White House official gave no details beyond Trump's comments but said: "Within a short period of time they will fall, and we will be there to help them out."
Representatives for the U.S. State Department and the Cuban government also did not respond.
Trump is traveling to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. China has called on the United States to immediately end its embargo and sanctions on Cuba. Trump told reporters at the White House that he expects to have a good meeting with Xi.
