The vast majority of those old enough to remember September 11, 2001, say they can recall where they were when they first heard what was happening. About two-thirds of Americans surveyed say the attacks affected the United States “a great deal” or “quite a bit.” The findings show 9/11 continuing to stand out even when compared with other major events of recent decades, including the 2008 financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic and presidential elections. Friday marks the 25th anniversary of the attacks, when nearly 3,000 people were killed after hijacked planes struck the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon outside Washington, while another crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
