The National Football League will host its 2027 draft in Washington, D.C., U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday (May 05) at the White House, bringing the league's biggest off-season event to the nation's capital for the first time since 1940.
The three-day event that regularly attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors is expected to take place on the National Mall, a stone's throw from the White House.
"The draft is a celebration of one of our country's most cherished cultural institutions," said Trump, speaking from inside the Oval Office.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told reporters he expects more than one million visitors at the 2027 draft, far more than the estimated record 775,000 who attended the 2024 edition in Detroit.
The Army is pausing helicopter flights near a Washington airport after two commercial planes had to abort landings last week because of an Army Black Hawk helicopter that was flying to the Pentagon. The commander of the 12th Aviation Battalion directed the unit to pause flight operations around Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport following Thursday’s close calls, two Army officials confirmed to The Associated Press. They spoke on the condition of anonymity to provide details not publicly announced. The unit is continuing to fly in the greater Washington, D.C., region. The pause comes after 67 people died in January when a passenger jet collided in midair with a Black Hawk helicopter at Reagan airport.

Three people are dead and five others were injured after a shooting Sunday night at a restaurant in a Phoenix suburb, police said.
Police received calls reporting gunshots around 7:45 p.m. at El Camaron Gigante Mariscos & Steakhouse, Glendale Police Department Officer Moroni Mendez said at a news conference. Mendez said three people died from their injuries and the others were injured by gunshots or shrapnel, KPHO-TV reported.
Mendez said “a lot of people” were at the restaurant for an event when the shooting unfolded but did not release further details about what led to the gunfire.
The restaurant said in a statement that the shooting happened outside in its parking lot.
“Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all affected by this senseless violence,” the statement said.
Police believe there was more than one shooter involved. Investigators did not have a suspect in custody but multiple people were being questioned early Monday, Mendez said.
“Anyone who has information, please come forward and provide that to us because as we just recently stated, there are three deceased,” Mendez said. “So we want to make sure we do a complete and thorough investigation, and do right by the victims.”
Bystander Lupe Rodriguez said he ran to safety. He was shaken, but said he was grateful that he and his friends survived.
“There was a man on the ground, and it didn’t look like he made it,” Rodriguez said. “His father was yelling out his name.”

Officials say a small boat believed to be carrying migrants capsized off San Diego's Pacific coast, leaving three people dead, four injured and nine others missing. U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Chris Sappey says it was unclear where the boat was coming from before it flipped about 35 miles north of the Mexico border. He described the boat as a panga. Pangas are open boats designed for fishing but commonly used by smugglers. Coast Guard crews were searching near Torrey Pines State Beach.
Iran's foreign minister urged India and Pakistan on Monday to exercise restraint as he arrived in Islamabad for a one-day visit, while the nuclear-armed rivals trade accusations over a deadly attack in disputed Kashmir.
India has accused Pakistan of involvement in last month's attack on tourists, which Islamabad denies. It says it has "credible intelligence" that India intends to launch military action, fueling prospects for war between the neighbors.
"We seek de-escalation and urge all parties to exercise restraint and avoid increasing tensions," Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi told reporters on arrival in Pakistan's capital.
Pakistan did not explicitly say the standoff was behind the visit. Iranian ambassador Reza Amiri Moghadam told state media the matter would be on the agenda, given Iran's close ties with both nations.
Araqchi will also travel to Delhi on Thursday, Iran's embassy in India said on X. It was not immediately clear if the visits were planned prior to the latest tension.
"The two sides will also exchange views on regional and global developments," Pakistan's foreign office said in a statement flagging the meetings.
India's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It has previously ruled out third-party mediation in matters related to Kashmir.
The Muslim-majority Himalayan region claimed by both India and Pakistan has been the focus of several wars and diplomatic stand-offs.
Since the attack, Islamabad has been in touch with a number of capitals regarding the situation, its foreign office said, most recently through a telephone call between Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.
