Trump proposes renaming New Mexico to 'New America'

(The Center Square) – President Donald Trump posted a photo on Sunday of a map renaming New Mexico to “New America.”

New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, slammed the president for that post in one of her own.

“New Mexico’s name isn’t up for debate—it’s been ours since before the United States existed. What is up for debate? Who’s showing up for working families,” Grisham said. “While the President tries to distract Americans from his disastrous war in Iran, gas prices keep soaring. Americans are also spending more at the grocery store, losing access to health care and wondering if they’ll ever be able to afford a home.”

Trump’s post came after a social media rumor spread that he’d already signed an executive order changing the name of the 47th state.

“Many people suggested changing the name of New Mexico, one of the great vote cheating states of all time, to NEW AMERICA,” Trump said. “So much more prestigious and beautiful for the people of that potentially incredible State. Wow, I Love It!!”

Since Sunday, Trump has posted seven different photos of New Mexico featuring the name New America to his social media.

The official White House account also reshared Trump’s original post.

This came just after the recent uproar over Trump signing an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America. Trump also previously renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

Other Democrats joined Grisham in pushing back against the president, who does not have the authority to rename states.

“Three things I will always call by their actual names...The Gulf of Mexico, Lake Ontario, New Mexico,” said U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-New Mexico.
