BOSTON (AP) — The Massachusetts unemployment rate soared during the early months of the coronavirus pandemic but fell nearly 9 points in August to a little over 11% in numbers released Friday. Massachusetts no longer has the highest unemployment rate in the country. That distinction now goes to Nevada. The August rate is significantly lower than the revised rate of over 16% in Massachusetts in July. Meanwhile, the Red Sox have laid off 10% of their full-time employees as a result of the pandemic. Massachusetts reported eight newly confirmed coronavirus deaths and more than 430 newly confirmed cases Friday.
