An American photojournalist who escaped from Al Qaeda in Syria says he discovered what he describes as a pattern of "betrayal" by the FBI.

Fox News reports Matt Schrier, taken hostage in 2012, later investigated his own kidnapping. He says he has proof the FBI monitored his accounts as Al Qaeda terrorists used his money to buy at least a dozen computers and tablets.

Schrier claimed the FBI, hoping to track those devices, left him there, putting intelligence gathering ahead of his personal security.

Schrier says he wants answers from former FBI Director Robert Mueller, who now leads the special counsel Russia probe, and former FBI Director James Comey, who then took over for Mueller.

An FBI spokesperson said the bureau could not respond to specific questions about Schrier's case.
