Thankful for God’s Unchanging Character
Your Nightly Prayer

TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever”--Hebrews 13:8

SOMETHING TO PONDER

Have you ever been around someone, either at home, school, work, or in the community, who is so unpredictable, not knowing what frame of mind they’ll be in the next time you see or speak to them?

One day they’re friendly and happy towards you, but the next day they might be angry and upset, where being around them is like riding a roller coaster ride without a seatbelt, throwing you off this and that way, along with unexpected ups-and-downs, a relationship where one day they seem to love you and the next they look at you with contempt and fire in their eyes, unwilling to even speak to you.

Being around someone so unpredictable in their emotions and behavior is extremely draining and stressful for most of us, especially if it’s someone we live or work with and see on a daily basis; living and trying to cope day in and day out, not knowing what they’ll be like around the next corner. 

It’s a relationship where we feel like we have to tiptoe around just to keep the peace, not knowing if or when they’ll explode.

Knowing people who seem to change with the wind helps us to appreciate even more those individuals who are steady and stable, who basically seem to be the same person day after day.

Still, in our world, they may be few and far between, hard to find on even a good day. But even if we can’t find steadiness in the people around us, we can with Jesus. In the middle of human chaos, He’s our steadfastness.

His word tells us that He’s the same yesterday, today, and forever, so we don’t have to wonder if He’s going to change and be someone different tomorrow or next week. We can live each day with the comfort and confidence of knowing He doesn’t change. 

We don’t have to be afraid that His feelings towards us will change from day to day, or live in fear and trembling at how He might respond or feel about us the next day and in the future.

We can take Him at His word that He will still love us no matter the hour, day, year, or decade it is. His character is unchanging. Because it is, our hearts are filled with gratitude in knowing and remembering His steadfastness across all seasons.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Dear Father,
Our hearts are full of gratitude when we think of and remember your timeless steadfastness across all seasons. We praise You that we can count on You being the same day after day and forever. Help us to live and walk out the kind of unchanging character that knowing You brings to our lives, so that we may glorify You. Help us to be a witness to those around us, strengthening us to be steady and stable like You, so that those who don’t know You will be drawn to You. Lead those we come in contact with to trust You, as Your steadfast character is revealed in and through us.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen. 

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

1. When you think of Jesus, what characteristics come to mind? Do you think of Him as steady and stable, unchanging?

2. In thinking of Jesus’ characteristics, do you see any of them in you? If so, in what ways?

3. Compose a list of ways you want to be like Jesus and commit to putting them into practice in your daily life. Ask God to help you to be steady and to strengthen you to do so.
